Redness and irritation under the band
The good news first
Redness under a sports band worn twenty-four hours a day is, in the vast majority of cases, mechanical irritation: friction, damp, pressure. Not an allergy. It corrects without changing material, and usually without buying anything.
That said, one caveat: if the redness spreads beyond the band area, if it blisters, or if it persists for days after taking the device off, this article no longer applies to you. See a doctor.
Cause 1: too tight
The most common by far. A band that blanches the skin around it is too tight. The benchmark: one finger passes between strap and wrist, not two.
Many morning marks come from a training setting left on overnight. Circulation slows during sleep, and a fit that felt comfortable during a session becomes excessive a few hours later.
Cause 2: prolonged damp
Skin that stays damp under a strap softens and abrades at the slightest friction. It is the same mechanism that eventually makes a band smell.
The fix is the same: rinse after exertion, dry flat, and if possible rotate between two bands so neither stays damp permanently.
Cause 3: the fixed pressure point
The device always presses in the same place. Move it a few millimetres each day, or switch wrists every other week. That single habit resolves a lot of stubborn cases.
Cause 4: the band itself
A weave saturated with salt, soap or detergent turns rough and irritating. Likewise, a band that has lost its elasticity moves more, so it rubs more.
Silicone has a different problem: it does not breathe, and sweat stays trapped against the skin. It is the most common reason people move to textile. A ribbed lining goes further: by lifting the weave slightly, it reduces the contact area and lets air circulate. That is the construction of our bands.
The finer CoreKnit weave dries faster still: it is the better option when damp is the main cause.
The one-week protocol
Loosen a notch, wash the band in lukewarm water with mild soap, dry it flat, leave the wrist bare for an hour a day and move the device daily. If nothing improves after a week, then and only then does the question of material arise.
Change the material before the habit
Skin that reacts prefers an open weave to a closed strap. Fern, Sage and Mocha let air through where silicone holds it in.
