A band that has stretched out: what wears a weave
Elastic tires, that is its nature
The weave of a WHOOP band contains elastic threads that stretch every time you put it on and return to length. After a few thousand cycles they return slightly less well. This is normal behaviour, not a fault, and it affects every elastic band whatever its quality.
What varies enormously, on the other hand, is how quickly it happens.
The four accelerators
Permanent damp. The first factor, well ahead of the rest. A band that never dries out fully loses its spring far faster than a dry one.
Heat. Tumble dryer, radiator, prolonged full sun, a daily sauna: heat cooks elastic and leaves it permanently slack.
Unrinsed salt and chlorine. They crystallise inside the weave and saw at the fibre from within, with every movement.
Over-tightening. A band held at maximum tension permanently lengthens faster than one set correctly. See: getting the fit right.
How to know it is finished
Three signs, in the order they appear:
- The device moves on the wrist even with the clip set as tight as it goes.
- The weave holds a permanent ripple when laid flat, instead of returning straight.
- The smell comes back within two days of a full wash.
The first sign matters most, because it is no longer cosmetic: a device that moves is a sensor losing contact, and therefore false readings. At that point the band is no longer doing its job.
What genuinely extends the life
Drying flat after every session, rinsing after the sea or the pool, and rotating between two bands. Those three habits weigh far more than how often you wash it.
A ribbed lining helps too, for a simple reason: it lets air move between skin and weave, so the band dries while it is being worn. That is the construction we use across all our bands.
When it is time
A stretched weave does not come back. Oxblood, Moss and Plum take over, and rotating two bands doubles the life of both.
