Official or third-party WHOOP band: what really changes
A word of caution
We make third-party bands. You are therefore entitled to expect a biased piece. So let us list what the official band does better instead, because it is the only way to make the rest credible.
What the official band does better
Band-dependent features. On WHOOP MG, ECG and Heart Screener require a conductive band. No textile band replaces it, ours included. See: ECG and Heart Screener.
The manufacturer's warranty. A third-party accessory does not void the device warranty, but it is not covered by it. If the band breaks, that is between you and whoever sold it.
Certainty about fit. Buying from the manufacturer makes a generation mistake impossible. Elsewhere, it is the number one cause of returns.
What a third-party band brings
Choice. That is the real reason. A manufacturer releases a sensible range; the third-party market offers dozens, with materials and artwork nobody would have signed off in a committee.
Price per unit. Since it is genuinely useful to own more than one band to make them last, the price gap weighs on the decision.
Different constructions. Ribbed lining, fine weave, a sliding clip instead of notches: these are manufacturing choices, not marketing lines, and they change how a band feels.
How to spot a bad third-party band
- The generation is not stated clearly, or the listing says “fits all WHOOP” — which is false, 4.0 and 5.0 have different connectors.
- The band is advertised as ECG-compatible with no metal section visible on the inside.
- The photos are 3D renders rather than pictures of the actual product.
- No mention of the material or the type of fastening.
The sensible position
Keep the original band, especially if you have an MG and use the ECG. Add one or two others to rotate. You are not replacing the official band, you are giving it time to dry.
What we make
Our bands are woven rather than moulded, and sit over the original sensor: Navy for the plainest, Forest for a green that holds, the "Who cares, I'm already late" band for a line no committee would have signed off, RL Bear for what the official range will never do.
