Woven or silicone: which material for a WHOOP band

Two different logics

Silicone is waterproof: water runs off it and does not get in. A weave absorbs, then dries. Almost every difference between the two follows from that single point.

Where silicone wins

Serious swimming. Nothing to dry, nothing to hold chlorine. For someone who swims daily it is objectively the better material.

Cleaning. A rinse and it is clean, with no drying time.

Where a weave wins

Everyday sweat. Silicone does not breathe: sweat stays trapped between skin and strap and does not evaporate. That is what produces the clammy feeling, and often the irritation, after a long day.

Comfort at night. An elastic weave deforms with the wrist; silicone does not. It is the most common reason people switch material.

Adjustment. A sliding clip adjusts continuously, a band with holes in fixed notches. When the right fit falls between two holes, there is no solution.

Printing. Artwork printed into a weave is part of the fibre: it does not peel and it does not flake. That is what makes a band carrying a line of text possible rather than just a colour — the "No Risk No Story" holds four words in marker pen, red and black, across the sensor panel.

Looking right outside sport. A weave slips under a shirt cuff; a black silicone strap stays a piece of training kit.

How to choose

If you swim most days, or use your MG's ECG daily: silicone or a conductive band.

If you wear your WHOOP continuously, nights and office included: a weave, with a ribbed lining to let air through.

And if you cannot decide, the most honest answer is to own one of each and rotate — which incidentally makes both last longer.
