The device is not the question

A WHOOP is designed to stay on the wrist permanently, showers included. So the question is not about the unit but about what holds it: the band is the part that absorbs, dries badly and ages.

The shower

No problem at all, every day. It is a good moment for the daily rinse. Two caveats: soap and shower gel leave a film if they are not rinsed off, and repeated very hot water eventually slackens the elastic in a weave. Rinse with clean water on the way out and the band stays like new for longer.

The pool

Chlorine is the main enemy, more than the water itself. It slowly fades pale colours and weakens the fibre over time. Swimming with the band once is no issue; it is repetition without rinsing that wears it down.

Thirty seconds of clean water on leaving the pool cancels most of the damage. If you swim several times a week, a fine weave dries considerably faster than a thick one: it is the one case where we clearly recommend the CoreKnit over the SuperKnit.

The sea

Salt is harsher than chlorine, and it does not leave as things dry: it crystallises inside the weave, turning it rough and then irritating. Sand makes it worse by working its way into the steel clip.

After the sea, rinsing is not optional. Clean water, working around the clip and the buckle, then dry flat in the shade. A band left to dry in full sun after a sea swim loses its colour far faster than in normal use.

Sauna and steam room

Prolonged dry heat is kind to no elastic. An occasional visit does nothing; a daily ritual visibly shortens a band's life. If the sauna is part of your week, keep a dedicated band for it rather than the one you wear the rest of the time.

What really damages a band

Not water. Water that stays. A wet band kept on the wrist all day, or rolled into a bag, wears out far faster than one that is soaked and then dried flat. The rule fits in a sentence: getting it wet does nothing, failing to dry it does everything.
