Why a WHOOP band starts to smell, and how to stop it
Where the smell comes from
Not from the fabric, but from what settles in it. A WHOOP is worn continuously: it goes through the gym, the shower and the night, and it never dries out completely. Between strap and skin, moisture stays trapped for hours after every session, and the bacteria that live naturally on skin multiply there. What you smell is their residue, not the sweat itself.
That is why a new band can smell after three weeks even though you have washed it. The problem is almost never the washing. It is the drying.
The two habits that change everything
Rinse after exertion. Thirty seconds of clean water after a session, the sea or a chlorinated pool. Salt and chlorine attack the fibre as much as they feed the smell.
Dry flat, in open air. Not rolled up in a gym bag, not on a radiator. A band that dries out fully once a day does not smell.
Washing, when it is really needed
Lukewarm water, mild soap, rub gently between your fingers, rinse, dry flat. Nothing else.
Avoid: the washing machine, which distorts the elastic and batters the steel clip; the tumble dryer, which cooks the fibre; bleach, which strips the print; and rubbing alcohol, which dries the weave out and leaves it brittle. A band ruined by a harsh product does not come back.
Rotate, rather than wash more
This is the most effective answer, and nobody reaches for it first. Two bands worn in rotation each get twenty-four hours to dry out completely between wears. In practice neither picks up a smell, and the two together last longer than one band worn alone ever would.
It also explains why a single band wears out quickly: what tires it is not the number of hours on the wrist, it is never drying.
Nothing says the second has to match the first: a plain one for the week, an Already Late for the rest.
If the smell has already set in
A twenty-minute soak in lukewarm water with a spoonful of baking soda, then a thorough rinse and a flat dry, recovers most cases. If the smell returns within two days regardless, the weave is saturated and the band has reached the end of its life.
Our bands are woven elastic nylon with a ribbed lining against the skin, which limits direct contact and dries faster than a solid weave. Colourways are in ORIGINALS and in the printed models.
What dries fast does not smell
The smell comes from trapped moisture. The CoreKnit mesh — Black, Pink — dries in minutes, and Tide rinses without ceremony.
